From Claim to Proof: Why Buyers Now Ask for an EPD
A company says its product is the greener choice. The buyer's procurement team reads that line and asks one question: Says who?
That question is where many sustainability claims fall apart. The math may be fine. But trust is the problem. The company graded its own homework, and in a market where overstated claims have burned customers, investors, and regulators, a self-reported number carries little weight. Buyers increasingly skip the back-and-forth and ask for one thing instead: an EPD.
Why "we measured it ourselves" no longer lands
A Life Cycle Assessment, or LCA, measures a product's full life cycle performance from raw materials to disposal. Plenty of companies run one internally. Then a procurement lead compares three suppliers: two hand over numbers they calculated themselves, one hands over a result an independent expert reviewed against an international standard. Only one survives sign-off. Investors run the same diligence test and discount anything self-reported.
What an EPD is
An Environmental Product Declaration, or EPD, is the formal, standardized version of that verification, so buyers can compare products on the same basis and independently verify the numbers. Think of it as a nutrition label for sustainability. An EPD is the published, verified result of a measurement, and that measurement is Life Cycle Assessment. No LCA, no EPD.
Every credible EPD rests on the same foundation. First, an LCA measures the product's impact throughout its life cycle, following the international LCA standard ISO 14040/14044.
The work follows Product Category Rules, the recipe for that product type, so the assessment is built the same way as everyone else's in the category.
And then an independent third party verifies the whole thing before it can be published. Verification turns a private calculation into a public, trusted declaration.
Why the requests keep coming
Public procurement programs, green building certifications, and product regulations increasingly require EPDs, and the expectation is spreading from construction into packaging, manufacturing, and consumer goods. Proof becomes the price of entry, and companies in a good position build the life cycle work early, before a customer or a regulation forces a scramble.
Where Boundless fits
At Boundless, the life cycle work is the work. Our LifeCycle IQ platform delivers ISO 14040/14044-compliant LCA, along with cost analysis, supply chain visibility, and competitor benchmarking, built for your specific product. When you need the formal outputs on EPDs, product carbon footprints, and independent validation -- our services team produces them with that same assessment.
The label is what your buyer sees. The assessment is what makes it true.
Our white paper covers the foundations of every EPD: what a strong Life Cycle Assessment looks like, how it is built, and how to tell credible work from weak work. Download the white paper.
