Carbon Calculators vs LCA: Why Estimations are not Reliable
If you have run your product through a carbon calculator and received a single number back, you might think the sustainability question is answered. That estimation answers one slice of it. The rest is still open, and a serious buyer will know the difference.
What a carbon calculator does
A carbon calculator estimates greenhouse gas emissions quickly using broad inputs for a quick internal gut check; that has its place.
The limits show up the moment the number has to carry weight. Most calculators rely on averages and broad categories rather than the specifics of your product, materials, and process. They report carbon and little else, and because the method underneath is often a black box, the result is hard to defend when a customer's procurement team or an auditor asks how you got there.
What Life Cycle Assessment does
Life Cycle Assessment, or LCA, measures a product's sustainability performance across its entire life cycle, from raw materials to disposal; hence the term "cradle to grave."
Two differences matter most.
First, scope. Carbon is one output of an LCA. A proper assessment also measures total energy demand, water use, and, depending on the product, effects like nutrient runoff and toxicity. A product can post a decent carbon number while carrying its real impact somewhere a simple calculator never looked.
Second, defensibility. An LCA built to ISO 14040/14044, the international standard for LCA, sets clear boundaries, documents its assumptions, and follows a consistent method, which is what lets the result stand up when someone seriously examines it.
How to tell which you need
Ask what the number is for. A rough internal sanity check? A calculator might be enough. Presenting to a customer, an investor, a regulator, or including the number in a formal declaration? You need the life cycle view, because that is the standard those audiences hold you to. The expensive mistake is entering a calculator number into a pitch or bid, then stalling when the buyer asks for the rationale behind it.
An LCA does double duty. The same work that produces a defensible carbon number also gives you the energy, water, and other impact figures, plus the foundation for formal outputs later. Build it once, properly, and it answers far more than a calculator ever could.
